Konica C35 FD is the Japanese domestic model name for the legendary Konica Auto S3.
Pretty much any list or forum thread asking for advice on the best ever compact rangefinder camera will feature this camera in the top five. Around the size of a Minolta Hi-Matic 7sII, and not much larger than a compact camera, the Auto S3 is every bit as sharp and boasts a superb viewfinder, even when used with glasses. However, the real reason this camera is so special is the Flashmatic external flash exposure system. When used with the Konica X-14 or X-20 flash unit, a second meter needle shows the flash exposure level based on the ASA setting, rangefinder distance and guide number. Using the manual shutter speed, you can balance the ambient exposure relative to the fill flash. No other rangefinder boasts such easy, precise and reliable flash exposure.
Despite the deserved popularity of the Konica Auto S3, the C35 FD is not as well known outside Japan. For every five Konica Auto S3’s that I see, I might see one C35FD if I’m looking hard. They are often mistaken for the much cheaper and ubiquitous f/2.8 models. This can translate into a better value buy if you know what you’re looking at.
